The hamlet of Ringwood is located in the York Region of Ontario, in the Town of Whitchurch–Stouffville. The hamlet is located at the intersection of Stouffville Road and Highway 48, situated on the Little Rouge River, a tributary of the Rouge River on the Oak Ridges Moraine. In the early days, the community was located between Markham and Whitchurch in the County of York. In 1856, the hamlet was named Ringwood by George Sylvester, postmaster and a general store proprietor. The Little Rouge River borders Ringwood on the east. Ringwood’s population in 1857 was 200, which increased only slightly to 225 by 1910. But, by 1972, only 172 people lived in Ringwood. Cardinal Point, Ringwood’s subdivision north of Main Street, saw the construction of more than 250 homes between 2008 and 2010.

Whitchurch–Stouffville western gateway has been Ringwood for many years. At Main Street and Highway 48 you find Ringwood’s iconic post office. It has been used as the entrance to Stouffville since 1851. But in 2008 the Town of Whitchurch–Stouffville demolished the post office for the purpose of widening Main Street. Highway 48 was widened in the 1950s, which led to the demolition of some Ringwoods landmarks. In 1981, the expansion of Spring Lakes Golf Course destroyed an important archaeological site dating back to 1500 BC.
